Common Data Size Conversions (Bit to TB)
The smallest unit of digital data is a bit—every 8 bits = 1 byte. Most file sizes and storage capacities—such as USB drives, SSDs, cloud storage, and downloads—are measured in bytes.
With decimal units (base-10), converting is quick because each step moves by 1,000. That means you can convert by shifting the decimal point instead of doing complex math.
Here are the most-used conversions:
- 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes
- 1 MB (megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes = 1,000 KB
- 1 GB (gigabyte) = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes
- 1 TB (terabyte) = 1,000 GB = 1,000,000 MB
